DIOGENESS
Results
During the active period from August 16 to September 17, 2001 the BS spectrometer produced
about 3130 scans from which hundreds of solar X-Ray spectra were obtained, among them a few
for powerful solar flares. Of special interest are observations of an X5.3 class flare of August 25, 2001
which allowed to determine line of sight velocities of flare plasma during different phases of the flare
development process. The Helium-like ions of Ca, S and Si triplet area spectra are of very high quality which
allowed to detect several effects not previously observed. Unfortunately, sensor behind the collimator
did not function from the very beginning of the device power on and photometer was only operational
during the first five minutes.

An example of measured spectra recorded nearly simultaneously in Channels #1 and #4
of Diogeness during the maximum phase of X5.3 flare on August 25 of 2001.
On the horizontal axis the motor step Nos. are plotted.
The most prominent features on both spectra are the resonance Ca XIX w lines.
Scanning in both channels is performed in the opposite wavelength sense.
Thus the intercombination and forbidden lines comprising the Ca XIX triplet
are seen on the opposite sides of the presented range (recorded 20 s apart in time).

Velocities as determined for the resonance (w) and forbidden lines (z) of the CaXIX triplet.
The forbidden line is blended with the strongest dielectronic satellite line (j) which might
account for slightly different pattern of behaviour later in the flare decay.
